TASK 1: HOW MALAYSIAN CULTURE AFFECTS ENGLISH LANGUAGE

One of the tasks in our coursework is discuss how Malaysian Culture affects English Language. There are six major points given for us to elaborate on. However, we discussed with Madam Ira to divide each points to one group for elaboration. So, withdraw had been done and our group got the first point which is multicultural society – major ethnic groups and dialect groups.

We did some further research on how Malaysian culture affects English language especially on the multiracial society in Malaysia. Besides, we also met with Madam Ira to get some information and rough ideas on the topic. Further research enables us to find more information and we had divided it to three main parts in the presentation which are definition of multicultural, the history and mastery of English level in Malaysia during and after British colonial era and major common mistake by Malaysian when using English language.

Then, we started to analyse the points that we get and transfer it into PowerPoint. And then, we handed in the draft for checking. We get positive feedback; however, we did not submit the supporting details, made Madam to criticize us and reminded us to hand in the supporting details for our final assignment. We then edited back all the mistakes that we did in the draft and add in some new information and videos for our presentation.

The day for presentation had come. At first, I feel so nervous about the presentation. I need to present on the introduction of our presentation and a brief history on how English acquisition among Malaysian during the era of British colonial in Peninsular Malaysia. It is quite hard for me to explain the point in fluent English. However, I'm proud of myself that I can speak out anything related to the point in English.

What I get from the presentation is that multicultural society in Malaysia really affect in English language. The Malaysian English or Manglish is the example of how the other language such as Bahasa Melayu, Bahasa Cina and others mixed up with English language and it becomes widely used throughout Malaysian. If we really notice that only the English speakers will speak and pronounce the correct pronunciation for standard British English. I am not in that group yet, but I will try to reach it because I will be teaching English soon or maybe in future.

I feel so happy because our group did our best to impress Madam Ira and the others about our findings in that area. I also hope that the findings can be used for our revision for our examination later. That's all from me, thank you.
